Dojo rules
Eleven simple rules that keep the dojo workable for everyone.
- Respect and etiquette:
- Always show respect to the dojo, the instructors and your fellow students.
- Bow to the shomen (the front of the dojo) when stepping onto and off the mat.
- Bow to your partner before and after every exercise.
- Hygiene and clothing:
- Always wear a clean and tidy gi (training suit).
- Make sure your body and feet are clean.
- Remove jewellery, watches and other accessories to prevent injury.
- Conduct on the mat:
- Follow the sensei’s (teacher’s) instructions without argument.
- Practise with care and stay aware of your own safety and that of others.
- Shouting, inappropriate behaviour and aggression are not permitted.
- Punctuality:
- Arrive on time for class. If you are late, wait at the edge of the mat until the sensei gives you permission to join.
- Stay until the end of class and help clear the mat if needed.
- Health and safety:
- Tell the sensei about any injuries or health problems before class begins.
- Do not force techniques, and respect your own limits and those of your partner.
- Report accidents or injuries to the sensei immediately.
- Communication and cooperation:
- Train with different partners to improve your skills.
- Be patient and supportive towards beginners and less experienced students.
- Share what you know and learn from others.
- Tidiness and upkeep:
- Keep the dojo and the mat clean and tidy.
- Put personal belongings neatly in the places provided.
- Help clean and maintain the dojo.
- Weapons and equipment:
- Treat practice weapons (boken, jo and tanto) with respect.
- Put weapons away properly after use and keep them in good condition.
- Do not use weapons without the sensei’s permission.
- Personal development:
- Show commitment and effort in your training.
- Be open to feedback and keep working on your personal and technical growth.
- Maintain a positive attitude and seek harmony inside and outside the dojo.
- Narcotics and stimulants
- The use of narcotics and/or stimulants in the dojo is strictly forbidden.
- If there is a medical reason for using substances that may affect your functioning, this must be reported to the sensei.
- General conditions:
- Follow the dojo’s guidelines and respect the community.
- Taking part in classes is at your own risk. The dojo is not responsible for personal belongings or injuries.
- The sensei reserves the right to deny access to the dojo in case of repeated inappropriate behaviour or failure to observe these rules.
