NIVM code of honour

Our ethical code, shared with the Dutch aikido association.

Aikido aan de Rijn subscribes to the code of honour of the Netherlands Institute for Martial Arts and Society (NIVM).

NIVM code of honour

  1. Respect:
    • Treat everyone with respect, inside and outside the sport.
    • Show respect for your opponent, your teacher and your fellow practitioners.
  2. Discipline:
    • Follow your teacher’s instructions and respect the rules of the sport.
    • Work hard and commit to improving yourself continuously.
  3. Sportsmanship:
    • Act honestly and sincerely at all times, in training as well as in competition.
    • Show good sportsmanship, whether you win or lose.
  4. Responsibility:
    • Take responsibility for your own actions and conduct.
    • Help and support others in their development and their safety.
  5. Safety:
    • Provide a safe environment for yourself and for others.
    • Report dangerous situations or behaviour to your teacher or to the person responsible.
  6. Integrity:
    • Be honest and dependable in every part of your life.
    • Avoid cheating, deception and other unethical behaviour.
  7. Involvement:
    • Contribute actively to a positive and inclusive sporting community.
    • Encourage and motivate others to live up to this code.

Notes on the code

  • Respect: This is the cornerstone of every martial art. By showing respect you create an environment in which everyone feels valued and safe.
  • Discipline: Martial arts demand self-discipline, perseverance and a constant willingness to learn and grow.
  • Sportsmanship: Fair competition and observing the rules are essential to a healthy sporting environment.
  • Responsibility: As a martial artist you are an example to others. Responsible behaviour helps build trust and respect.
  • Safety: Safety comes before everything. Make sure your actions do not put others at risk.
  • Integrity: A martial artist must hold to ethical standards, inside and outside the dojo.
  • Involvement: Taking an active part in the community and encouraging positive interaction strengthens the bonds between practitioners.

The NIVM code of honour helps foster a positive, respectful and safe sporting environment in which everyone can develop and flourish. Living up to this code contributes to the reputation and the integrity of the martial arts in the Netherlands.
